Powell states that, “the latest figure was boosted by a significant increase in gasoline and other energy prices” (The Federal Reserve System 2). Nonetheless, Powell claimed that the prevailing inflation rate, which was a little above two 2%, was the best in achieving stability in prices and reduced unemployment levels in the long-term. The rate of unemployment had increased as compared to previous years where more jobs were created and a significant number of people joined the workforce. He states, “T he unemployment rate edged down from 4.1 percent in December to 4.0 percent in June” (5). Correspondingly, the labor market was indicated to have strengthened over the last years because of the establishment of new companies in the economy (Fischer 19). As a result, wages were noted to have grown at a faster rate in the same period compared to previous years. Other factors that were noted to have significant impacts on the U.S. economy were real GDP, which has increased in recent times, and consumer income, which has declined (Adrian and Liang 15).
