17.George W. Bush – elected 43rdPresident and son of the 41stPresident. 9 months into his presidency the September 11, 2011 (9/11) attack by Al-Qaeda occurred. Al-Qaeda, a terrorist organization foundedby Islamic Fundamentalists in Saudi Arabia, opposed Western influence and especially resented the presence of U.S. troops in Saudi Arabia. They began Jihad, or “holy war” against the U.S. by committing acts of terror.Al-Qaeda had sent some of their members to the U.S. to attend flight-training school. The terrorists boarded several commercial jets and used box cutters to threaten passengers in order to hijack the planes.They flew tow planes into the World Trade Center in New York City. The two World Trade Center towers collapsed leading to more than 3,000 deaths and closing down much of New York City. A third plane crashed into the Pentagon Building in Washington, D.C. A fourth plane was meant for the White House, but the passengers on board learned of the other crashes and fought the hijackers, causing the plane to crash in a wooded area in Pennsylvania. 18. Taliban – is an Islamic Fundamentalist government ruling Afghanistan. President Bush demanded that the Taliban turn over Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. He was the mastermind of the 9/11 attack.
The Taliban refused and therefore American forces attacked Afghanistan. The Taliban was quickly overthrown however American troops failed to capture Osama bin Laden.19.Iraq War – President Bush suspected that the dictator of Iraq, Saddam Hussein, was concealing forbidden chemical and biological weapons of mass destruction from U.N. weapons inspectors. Bush ordered U.S. forces to invade Iraq in March 2003. No weapons were ever found, leading critics in the U.S. and abroad to claim that the whole invasion had been a mistake. As time went by, the occupation of Iraq became increasingly unpopular among Americans, who were also shaken by a domestic financialcrisis that began in 2007. 20.Barack Obama – First African American & 44thU.S. President. His administration found and killed Osama bin Laden, the leader before the 9/11 attacks. 21.Globalization – Refers to more and more countries participating in global trade. The world “shrinking” due to everyone trading and the tariffs (taxes) and restrictions on trade being lifted or reduced. a.Telephones, radio, and the Internet making it easier and faster to communicate. World Trade Organization (WTO) the agreement signed by several leading nations to reduce tariffs and promote international trade. b.China establishing trade with the U.S. in 2000. China officially admitted into WTO in 2001. c.While globalization has lowered the prices of goods, it has also meant that American workers must now compete with laborers overseas. Outsourcing- hiring other companies to do the work,especially when those costs are significantly lower than making the same parts or providing the same services in the U.S.
