to do so if you are sick or have something going on at home. If you have to work late, outside of core business hours, almost everyone is fine if you do so from home and don’t stick around the office for face-time purposes.” • “You can work as much or as little as you want, depending on your life and career goals. If you make your hours (1950) you get a bonus. The firm doesn’t have an official telecommuting policy and expects you to come into the office most days, but some people do work from home occasionally and that’s not frowned upon.” • “This firm is very face-time heavy compared to other firms. The hours are typical of other firms, although I would say that overall we bill more hours than peer firms in DC. While the weekly hours are comparable, I haven’t seen any ‘lull’ or ‘downtime’ in my hours as I’ve seen other associates have at other firms. The work here is consistently steady.” Compensation • “I think that this firm has the best combination of ‘market.’ Market salary, market bonuses, paired with a very humane benchmark for bonuses (1950). I also appreciate, and think it is very fair, that the benchmark includes unlimited pro bono hours as well as any billable hours that aren’t actually collected on for some reason. Sometimes hours can be written off for reasons that are entirely outside of an associate’s control, and are not related to quality, so it is nice that associates aren’t penalized for that like they can be at other firms.” • “I’m extremely satisfied with the market rate salary. If I wanted the top-end bonuses offered at pressure cooker firms, I’d work elsewhere, but I’m very happy with Covington’s standardized, transparent schedule for bonuses in exchange for our relatively relaxed atmosphere. The firm’s benchmark of 1,950 billable hours (including unlimited pro bono) really is used only for determining whether you get the bonus or not. I know of people who choose to work 1,800 hours and have never gotten trouble for it.” • “The firm pays market rates, nothing more, nothing less. It is now presumed that you will receive a market rate bonus so long as you meet hours, which I think is a fair system.” • “Market rates for market hours. Hitting the benchmark of 1950 supposedly guarantees the bonus, unless there is a strong performance-related reason to deny you (but I have never heard of that actually happening). The firm does not offer a 401k match at all, and there is no health insurance plan available that results in 0 cost to associates, which is a little disappointing.” Quality of Work • “Excellent substantive work for all levels of associates. I know second years that run cases, take depositions, and take the lead with witnesses at trial. As a second year, I was drafting substantive motions (oppositions to motion to dismiss) on complex issues and interacting with clients. As a third year I began to be the point person for client contact on several matter, which has developed into strong relationships with the clients as I’ve moved into the mid-level ranks.”

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
