answers where there are no formulated questions. Faulkner’s Light in August encompasses the cyclicality of time and the insignificance time plays in the lives of the characters. There are no reasons for why certain events affect specific characters at a given moment, and Faulkner suggests that the search for these nonexistent reasons is pointless.. Faulkner’s character Joe Christmas searches for self-understanding, yet rather than finding answers he puts himself in a state of limbo and ultimately dies because of this lack of recognition for an objective view of the world. XMAS- searching for meaning, explanation, closure in his life- LEADS TO DISASTER because of the immense amount of conflict he goes through: in Limbo throughout the whole novel because this search of nothing leads him nowhere. NO purpose in his life because he is not thinking objectively. TIMELESSNESS. Only peace he gets is in a brutal death--again is backwards. Belief Believing v truth- when people look for the truth they only come across fact. YOU HAVE TO BELIEVE. Believing is the key force. XMAS doesn’t believe in who he is or the world in which he lives so therefore he can never know. HIGHTOWER reaches a self- understanding when he realizes that the facts of his ancenstry are unimportant- he believes he is his grandfather afaksjdflas—yet at the same time he is searching for a place LIFE IS A CONTRADITION of subjectivity and objectivity. Everyone lives in their own universes—therefore all of their opinions of the world are subjective. WE LIVE IN A WORLD of subjectivity. YET. The reality is to look through objectivity. And when this recognition is reached and this understanding is approached- THAT is when you reach limbo. Knowing believing and remembering Faulkner repeats knowing believing remembering- effects of those things- results in limbo First- first is about believing- Hightower- no answers-can’t believe
