MEDIA CONSOLIDATION Media companies have merged to create large conglomerates of newspapers and broadcasting stations Murdoch separated his newspapers because “they had become a drag on the market” Radio networks and newspapers were the first to buy televisions stations Merges created cross-ownership that patterns that still persist today CNN, FOX, and networks like C-SPAN have expanded the number of news sources to the 87% of households with t.v. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) : An independent regulatory commission charged with licensing stations The courts and ^ are reinforcing the the trend toward media conglomeration by relaxing and striking down regulations that limit cable and television network ownership by the same company REGULATION OF THE MEDIA National government oversees the broadcast medias licensing, financing, and even regulates content through the FCC The FCC’s regulatory power has been challenged on free speech grounds by the broadcast media who contend that not regulating some networks creates a double standard for broadcast and cable providers 9.3: THE MEDIA AND PUBLIC OPINION Television has the power to bring important events into our lives The pervasiveness of the media confers enormous influence on individuals who determine what we read, hear, and see because they can reach so many people so quickly The media have assumed the role of speaking to the people Journalists report what “the people” want and think and they tell them what politicians are doing about it The media can make or break a candidate Politicians spend a lot of time developing good relationships with the press T.V.’s ability to present images and communicate events has influences our opinion Analysts argued that political leaders had more influence in u.s. Politics than the media did Fireside chats Ronald Reagan = the great communicator Media is aggressive in news gathering The media influences the public through agenda setting and issue framing AGENDA SETTING By calling attention to certain issues, the media helps determine what topics will become subjects of public debate and legislation The media do not have absolute power to set the public agenda, the audience and the nature of any particular issue limit it Communicating through the media works, especially when it feels unscripted and natural
