While it is true that adipocytes do not divide and the number of fat cells in peripheral tissues is limited, mesenchymal cells can divide and give rise to cells that differentiate into fat cells. Thus, areolar connective tissue can become adipose tissue in times of nutritional excess. Along with this, the fat cells that remain after surgery can enlarge by storing more triglyceride if the patient continues to overeat.
