Status of ISIS: very weak and US has defeated ISIS for the most part, strategically and territorially defeated in Iraq and Syria ISIS/ISL: Islamic state of Iraq and Levant Main objective of ISL/ISIS: wanted to dominate region/world, wanted to gain enough territory for own state What kind of leader is Assad? Baathist party dictator (same as Saddam), secular Secularism is not religious (won’t have religious based laws or decision making), Syria is secular unlike other middle- eastern territories Why did US launch air strikes on Syria in April of 2018? Had chemical weapons storage facility, chemical R&D facility. Since 2011, ~400,000 people were killed in Syria Where are the majority of refugees going? Turkey. 2 nd largest? Lebanon. Germany, France isn’t receiving the 1 st and 2 nd most refugees from Syria What side of the conflict is Israel on? Not helping Assad in any capacity What is Hezbollah? Organization that wants to shoot missiles at Israel, Iranian backed terrorist organization How did ISIS start? AQI (al-Qaeda in Iraq) lead to ISIS, when we left Iraq, AQI developed into ISIS CPA-Coalition provisional authority, government US put into power after overthrow of Saddam
