Management and Restoration The Global Environment Facility (GEF) is assisting a large marine ecosystem plan in the Gulf of Mexico to focus on serious threats to the coastal and marine environment, and to endorse ecosystem-based management of coastal and marine resources (J. Emmett Duffy, 2008). The plan proposal was established for this large marine ecosystem by marine specialists from Mexico, Cuba, and the United States. The objective of the plan is to promote national and regional efforts to discuss the highest level of environmental and living resource concerns in the large marine ecosystem. It is believed that new ideas and methods are necessary in protecting the living resources and marine life of these large marine ecosystems as well as protecting it from human destruction. It is believed that policies and institutional improvements will be established to address the major concerns to ecosystem sustainability (R. Eugene Turner, n.d.). Species Interaction The Gulf of Mexico large marine ecosystem is a foremost resource to the three surrounding countries, in terms of fisheries, tourism, oil, and import/exports.
