As much as the government tried to keep victims of the plague isolated from the rest of the population, they couldn't control it all. Many victims would conceal having the plague and therfore die. Other victims came into hospitals causing great fear in the natives, but those who already carried the plague would more likely die than heal in the hospital since they had no cure to it. The Plague Commissions had started to study the plague, but it was a somewhat chaotic study. Cases were concealed from authorities and unreported. 5 The Indian plague crisis, demonstrated the “limits of colonial medicine in the face of native tradition and resistance” 6 . People could no longer trust the western medicine. Through all of this, major improvements were made in the public health in India.
