When he writes about his instances of racism throughout his works, I believe he is trying to address the fact that racism is such a big issue that is often overlooked and to express how it has a lasting impact on the victim. In Thousand Star Hotel , racism is American society is represented in a negative light. There is a poem titled, Being Asian in America , it is short, sweet and to the point, “Survive long enough and eventually everything becomes a revolution” (104). This poem makes my heart hurt to know that even here in America people feel like their biggest job is to merely survive. When you think of surviving you think of people who are at war and living in America should not be like living in a battlefield. Furthermore, racism in American society is depicted in Night of the Living (89), “How do I help raise an Asian child in a country with a political right that will hate her unless she assimilates and they use her, and a radical left that will hate her unless she assimilates and they use her?” A father shouldn’t have to ask himself who his daughter should be used by. Going back to the principles that America was founded on, equality, no one should be a slave to another because all men were created equal. So why then is it acceptable as a society to make a person choose who they want to be a slave to? It is also important to realize that Phi refers to his daughter as an Asian child, implying that there are potentially other races who do not have to decide the same fate for their child.
