Before Kennedy and the Cold War it was the same story, an excuse was made for why some Latin American countries could not rule themselves, and so America had to step in and lend assistance. Kennedy, Nixon, and the other politicians of America just desired to see the perpetuation of American Hegemony over the Western Hemisphere. This is not exactly a noble goal and so the imaginary threat of Communism and its spread had to be trumped up and used as the rationale to the American public. Matthews words are no better, he purposefully clouds the truth around the Cuban revolution and Castro to put Americans at ease. He hopes to convince people that all is well in Cuba, that Castro is a friend to the United States, and that America still reigns supreme in the Western Hemisphere. Castro's true intentions could not have been lost on Matthews, but the times demanded that the United States appear infallible. Finally, for all Castro's talk of fighting for justice and to ease the suffering of the workers, we know his regime was no less cruel than Batista. He traded Yankee imperialism for Soviet cruelty, he distracts his people from their suffering by rousing their anger towards the United States. His impassioned speeches are nothing more than sleight of hand distracting from his own character flaws and the problems of Cuba. Intellectuals and politicians have always used rhetoric to confuse their motives, and the Cold War was just saturated with examples.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
