Nehemiah set a couple of requests and the king granted all. Nehemiahleft for the city, he rested and then examined the walls to determine a plan.Making some suggestions, he laid out the plan to the officials. Nehemiah had opposition from both inside and outside, there was distressand division among the people. Also the enemies tried stopping theirplans. When the wall was finished Nehemiah lacked the manpower todefend the city. As a leader whom God chose we read that Nehemiah had some qualitiesthat helped withstand his enemies. Nehemiah had a very strong faith inGod, for he declares in 4:14 in the midst of the opposition that God is greatand no enemy can overcome the people of Judea. Nehemiah was a manof prayer; this is encountered throughout the whole book. From the startto the end prayer is a dominant characteristic.- 7 -

ReadGHL_Historical BooksNehemiah called on God for his protection and stood upon trust in Godfirm in the face of the opposition while the wall was being rebuilt. Nehemiah was also a man who helped his fellow Judeans and people theyhad to close up the broken-down parts of the wall and rebuild the gates, which must not have been an easy task to do. Lastly, Nehemiah was obedient to God; therefore he was part of one of thegreatest spiritual renewals in the history of Israel. These qualities of which Nehemiah consisted of are very relevant forChristian leaders of today as well. Firstly, a Christian leader must beobedient to the Lord’s plans and instructions; otherwise the word wouldnever get done. For example if a leader decides to do what ever he wantsto, then the church would probably take a long time to reach their goals, therefore the helpers, elders also play an important role – accountability.Christian leaders must also be people who pray a lot, making sure whatGod’s plan and instructions are. To follow a plan and rebuild, one mustknow the plan and follow certain steps…same with God’s plan. Christian leaders must be servant hearted people, people who love othersand want to help those in need and improve the situation. Also a leadermust have strong faith in God. Leaders must be able to stand face to facewith the enemy and believe that God will protect and continue with the planHe has given the servant. A Christian leader’s faith should be strong and no matter what the oddsand how possible it seems, one must believe that God has a miraclewaiting to happen, because He is God, great, powerful, almighty andincredible. - 8 -
