of the story. Once the grandmother realizes she has gone wrong in her life; she has flawed like everyone else, the grandmother reached out to the Misfit saying, “Why you’re one of my babies. You’re one of my own children!”pg 414. This changed the Misfit because he realized that the grandmother is accepting him as one of her own children and, he didn’t know how to react expect killing her since that feeling of love and affection was very unfamiliar to him, since he was young, “The Misfit sprang back as if a snake had bitten him and shot her three times through the chest”pg 414. The way she acted during the moment of her death may have affected the Misfit at the end of the story when he realized what he has done by showing a bit of remorse, “The Misfit’s eyes were red-rimmed and pale and defenseless-looking” pg 414. At the end, the grandmother took responsibility of her actions and related to the Misfit that both of them are sinners. “ The heart of the story” is when the grandmother shared a connection with the Misfit before her death and they realize they are the same person. In conclusion, the grandmother started off being an old fashioned lady who judged everyone around her to someone that realize she has gone wrong in her life and accepts and admires the Misfit as one of her “children” and the person he truly is.
