Companies send a letter of inquiry to their business partner when they need information about the goods they'd like to order. A letter of inquiry is usually short and to the point, containing only the request and a short introduction with an address, phone number or e-mail address from the sender's side. Business letters generally conform to one of four indentation formats: Block, Semi- Block, Modified Block, and Modified Semi-Block. Put simply, "Semi-" means that the first lines of paragraphs are indented; "Modified" means that the sender's address, date, and closing are significantly indented. The two most common formats are full-block and modified-block .

Letters vs Memos – A Memo is for ~inner~ communication. You would send a memo to your work colleagues or fellow students/professors from the same school. A letter is for ~inter~ communication. You would send a letter to someone from a different company than yours, or a different school, etc. A letter is more formal, requires more address information, politeness, use of titles. Other than that they are basically the same. You need a short informative subject; You start with your MAIN POINT (one-three sentences). Then write your supporting details. EVERYING that is relevant. Don't leave things out, but don't put in things that aren't necessary for the Main point. Then make your request if there is one Polite closing Your initials/signature Know Parts of a letter: - Heading - Inside address - Salutation - Body - Complimentary close - Signature - End notations Proposals – internal, external, solicited, unsolicited A proposal is an offer or bid to do a certain project for someone. Proposals may contain other elements—technical background, recommendations, results of surveys, information about feasibility, and so on. But what makes a proposal a proposal is that it asks the audience to approve, fund, or grant permission to do the proposed project. A proposal is overtly persuasive. Request for Proposals (RFP) – or Invitation for Bid (IFB) The RFP may dictate to varying degrees the exact structure and format of the supplier's response. The creativity and innovation that suppliers choose to build into their proposals may be used to judge supplier proposals against each other, at the risk of failing to capture consistent information between bidders and thus hampering the decision making process. Effective RFPs typically reflect the strategy and short/long- term business objectives, providing detailed insight upon which suppliers will be able to offer a matching perspective. An Invitation for Bid (IFB) is commonly used by federal, state, and local government agencies to solicit bids on clearly defined products or services.
