pardoner, he tells the people that the relics are fake, but he still asks if anyone wants to buy some. It is ironic for a preacher to preach against actions and vices that he takes part in. An instance of situational irony in the Pardoner’s Tale includes when the three men go on a hunt to kill death. However, they end up getting killed themselves by their own partners. They initially went on a hunt but, because of their greed, they ended up killing each other. This is ironic because they attempted to kill something that they believed was a threat to them, when their largest threat was each other. Another example of situational irony in Chaucer's tale, he includes how the rioters were hypocrites. They all swore to protect each other and to “kill” death. However, they ended up plotting against each other because of greed and were killed. Also, all three men were after the goods but, none of them ended up with them because they killed each other off. Thus, none of the men ended up what they were willing to kill for. Their struggles to keep as much money as they could for themselves became pointless due to their death. All in all, The Pardoner's Tale and Prologue are full of instances of both situational and verbal irony.
