Jefferson, in addition, uses repetition in his remarks when he states, “We have petitioned for redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated petitions have answered only by the repeated injury.” (30) By Jefferson using repetition in this statement, he is emphasizing that colonists have not ceased petitioning and instead of real change taking place, harm and discontent are the only emotions and feelings they are actually experiencing. At the beginning of the Declaration of Independence, Jefferson’s tone is calm, respectful and in the end sounds almost inspirational when he declares national independence upon the colonists. By using a strong and descriptive word choice he is assisting the audience in understanding the seriousness and respectability of his speech and proves he knows his intent and how to accomplish it. In the syntax of this US document, Jefferson uses periodic sentence structures and anaphora to get his main points across. The length of his sentences are fairly short but the appeals to his target audience work, for the fact that he is very descriptive and manages to use repetition to emphasize the wrongdoings of the King toward the colonies, without making a mess out of his tactics.
