With fear that this war would threaten his domestic plan, Johnson covered the extent of the military increase from the Americans. The Vietnam War had a lot of effects on the United States. The war did not only affect the country economically as it was very costly but it also had effects on the political careers of president john F. Kennedy as well as president Richard Nixon. Johnson’s presidency started and ended with tragedy. The resolution of Tonkin gulf was one minor incident that changed everything by authorizing the use of force and this hurt the legacy of Johnson. Things were not working that well and Johnson lost popularity, Bobby Kennedy was driving pressure on, and Johnson could not work out a way to terminate the war or win it. Johnson restricted the generals but dispatched more troops in attempt to win. His defense clerk Robert McNamara was becoming soft on the war and weakening him. Students started protesting and his civil rights achievements did not salvage his falling reputation (McMahon). Johnson was the person who intensified the war according to the American people. At last, the effects of this war made Johnson exit the political arena by not vying for the 1968 reelections due to the heightened opposition towards this war. The war literally ended his presidency.
