An article in Sinuous Magazine gives rave reviews of this song and video combination stating that it “drops just in time for those of you who will spend Valentine’s Day leaving angry messages for you exes.” The author of the article herself even admitted to being a fan of the album and that “Heartbeat” was one of her “many favorites.” This source confirms all of the previous points of analysis of the meaning of the video, explicitly stating the woman taking the driver’s seat symbolizes her taking control of the relationship. The article also contributes to the analysis by stating that the video, though simple and vague, relies on the mood to make the meaning clear: “dysfunction, anxiety, paranoia, and delusions.” The author also demonstrates how relatable this song is by comparing her own personal experiences to it.

In conclusion, the song and video alike are a great portrayal of women challenging the common hegemony by taking a place of power among a clearly male dominated position within the media. The Rhetorical Method and Gender & Sexuality Method gave way to the persuasive meanings in the text and a new representation of women in the media. Childish Gambino’s video is a unique example of music videos in that it is not just a bunch of girls thrashing around to the beat or a man driving a nice car with the music blaring from the speakers. Rather, it is a symbolic representation of the desperation in understanding the complex workings of a relationship as it is coming to an end. It provides a positive representation of women by showing them as equal and admirable, while also capable of being in a position of power. This gives audiences a better outlook on the world. Though the lyrics are rude and abrasive, the true meaning of the song offers an extremely honest and sincere representation of love and loss. I thoroughly enjoyed the text and recommend it to anyone who has had experience in relationships and can understand the confusion that goes along with them. However, because of the rawness, I feel like it will not necessarily be everyone’s cup of tea if they do not take the time to understand the underlying concepts. Therefore, the target audience would most likely be both genders, ages 18-25, of any race and ethnicity, with a high school education or above. Modern media has shown a trend of vulgar portrayals of current social problems in society. In most cases, these issues are represented in a harshly negative way that shed little light on an effective means of approaching such issues. However, Childish Gambino blends the raunchy style with a positive message to create an interesting and unique new form of rap music. This is a break-through for music of all forms in that it allows a new perspective of issues to be molded, while also meeting the audience’s expectations of what the music is supposed to be like.

Childish Gambino paves the way for a long-awaited music revolution that will add not only meaning but life to music.
