2017). Due to the rampant killing of slaves, their life expectancy was low compared to the normal people who enjoyed their freedom. I have always thought that male slaves were more disadvantaged than women because the slave traders needed them for the hard labor. In addition, some of the articles that I have read before mostly tackled issues related to the male slave trade. I have realized that much of these works were biased since they were prepared by men and that women slaves were at a disadvantage since they were considered inferior. Whereas men mostly worked in farms and industries, women also did a lot, and most of their duties were specialized. It is important to note that women slaves were their owners' property and consequently, the treatment they received was dependent on their masters' personality. Unlike most men, the women were sexually assaulted and abused physically. There were also not allowed to bear children. Most of them died because of the conditions they were subjected to (Newton, 1962). Previously I only thought that slaves were acquired through trading procedures. In the ancient times, there are individuals who acquired their slaves by kidnapping. To my surprise some of the victims were children. Olaudah Equiano narrates a story about how he was kidnapped and taken away as a slave together with his sister. The kidnappers targeted young children who were left behind in homes when their parents had gone away (Equiano, 1789). They would ensure that the children could not scream to capture the attention of other people. The fact that the children cried, and it did not bother them showed how they did not care about

SLAVERY 5 the slaves. They even separated them while the kids begged not to be separated. Currently, those who engage in slave trade have devised new ways of making their business successful. For example, there are cases where people lie to parents to sell their kids to them after which they will educate them. Miller (2008) talks about an 11-year-old girl who was sold to a lady that claimed she would take the girl to school. The woman then sold the girl to a firm in Bangkok where she worked without being paid. It is surprising that she was even shot at some point.
