DEVELOPMENT THROUGHOUT THE LIFESPAN sexual impel of a human being, on the other hand, Erikson focused on characteristics. Freud understood that a person’s character developed in the course of adolescence, however, Erikson understood that a person’s character urbanized and evolved during a person’s life. Unlike Freud’s judgment that middle-aged had an important role, Erikson sited more meaning to the intellectual demands on a young person. So Freud is known for his psychosexual theory and Erikson is know for his psychosocial theory (pp. 1-2). Between the two theories, I would definitely have to work with Erikson’s theories, mainly because sex is not the only thing I learned or understood in life. Growing up without my real parents around to encourage me and support me throughout life, I have always depended on myself to make the right choices and under the care of my grandparents I had to learn things super ahead of my stages of life. So I was like more mature in my youngest age, not because I wanted to its because I had to in order for me to do everything around the house, chores, feeding the pigs, helping out my grandfather with the plantation, etc. Therefore, the thought of my past life had really surprised me that I was growing up and going through the development of lifespan without realizing it until now. I had a few friends and school was not my first priority at the time it was other things concerning the house and chores. In conclusion I believe that as we go through the progress during tour lifespan of Erikson’s psychosocial stages, we are managing our difficulties at our earliest stage of life that can also affect our personality and behaviors and social development at our later stages. Erikson believed that achieving a personally satisfying was the very heart and soul of an adolescent’s development. As adolescents developed into adults and reached middle adulthood, Erikson described a shift from concerns about identity to concerns about being productive, creative, and nurturing (Coles, 2000). 6
