Freeport Doctrine
Doctrine developed by Stephen Douglas that said the exclusion of slavery in a territory could be determined by the refusal of the voters to enact any laws that would protect slave property. It was unpopular with Southerners, and thus cost him the election.
Lecompton Constitution
Pro-slave constitution that got voted in for Kansas after anti-slavery people boycotted the election.
Ostend Manifesto
a declaration (1854) issued from Ostend, Belgium, by the U.S. ministers to England, France, and Spain, stating that the U.S. would be justified in seizing Cuba if Spain did not sell it to the U.S.

Ford got Sadat (Egypt) and Menachem (Israel) to come together to make peace. Egypt recognized Israel and Israel gave back territory and the Sinai peninsula
Panama Canal Treaty
1978 - Passed by President Carter, these called for the gradual return of the Panama Canal to the people and government of Panama. They provided for the transfer of canal ownership to Panama in 1999 and guaranteed its neutrality.
La Raza Unida
political party started by Jose Angel Gutierrez, worked for better housing and jobs, and also backed latino political candidates
Battle of Antietam
Civil War battle in which the North succeeded in halting Lee's Confederate forces in Maryland. Was the bloodiest battle of the war resulting in 25,000 casualties.
American Indian Movement
