An attempt at a comprehensive adjustment of the territorial questions. Made popular sovereignty the criterion for utah's statehood bid. Defined borders of California, Texas, New Mexico, and Utah. US assumed texas debt. Banned importation of slaves in D.C.

Samuel Chase
Jefferson urged the impeachment of a Supreme Court Justice based on the House indictment of "high crimes, and misdemeanors."
Evidence proved that the Justice had an unrestrained partianship and a big mouth, though not enough voted to impeach him.
To this day, there has been no further attempts to reshape the Supreme Court by impeachment.

The system encouraged people to sign up and become servants to land owners. The system became a profit to masters who had money to invest into paying for passage of laborers over to the colonies. Led to greater advancement in agriculture and commerce.
Suspension of Habeous Corpus

 1862; Lincoln suspended this right of the people (the right to a trial before punishment) so that he could take care of dissenters. He imprisoned without trial thousands of people that sympathized with the Confederacy, resisted the draft, or encouraged resistance.
(1950s) a social group of writers and poets that rebelled against the waves of cultural conformity. They wrote innovative literature that voiced their outspoken criticisms of society. The beats were also against corporate capitalism and suburban materialism. Beats were commonly young white people living in New York and San Francisco. This was a cultural rebellion that supported drug use, sexual adventurism, spontaneity, and spirituality. The beats would ultimately serve to inspire a new generation of rebels that would want not only cultural but also political change.

Nat Turner’s Rebellion
1831; this slave had a hard life, being separated from his wife and being reduced to mindless work. He claimed he had a vision from God that led him to rebel with a handful of other slaves. His small force killed about 60 whites but they were soon overpowered. The result of this event was that slave-owners got stricter with their slaves, reducing education of slaves and their mobility.

Court case in which the Supreme Court went against Virginia for the first time (Virginia had accused brothers of illegally selling lottery tickets)
James Weldon Johnson (1871-1938)
American poet and part of the Harlem Renaissance, he was influenced by jazz music.

A corporate lawyer in the U.S and was the dark horse Republican Party nominee for the 1940 presidential election, where he crusaded against the inefficiency and anti-business policies of the New Deal.

Fall of China, Mao Tse-Tung (Mao Zedong)
Mao Tse-Tung led the Communists in China. Because of the failure to form a coalition government between Chiang Kai-Shek and the Communists, civil war broke out in China after WWII. The Communists won in 1949, but the new government was not recognized by much of the world, including the U.S.
