How do you find the oxidation numbers of atoms in a molecule containing three elements when one of the elements is O and the other is a halogen?
If you have a molecule that contains three elements, one being O and another being a halogen, the oxidation number on the halogen is automatically -1 and the oxidation number of the O is -2. You then set the sum of the oxidation numbers of all of the atoms in the ion or molecule = charge of the ion or molecule.
Example: COCl₂
Here is what you know:
There are three elements, C, O, and Cl
There is 1 atom of C
There is 1 atom of O
There are 2 atoms of Cl
The Cl is a halogen, so its charge is automatically -1
The O has a charge of -2
The net charge of the molecule is 0
Here is how you set it up:
x + 1(-2) + 2(-1) = 0
x = +4
The oxidation number of C is +4
What is the oxidation number of each type of atom in CO₂?
The oxidation number of O is always -2. The oxidation number of C must be +4.
What is the oxidation number of oxygen atoms? What are the exceptions?
