•The focus in this chapter was on parenting and its implications for children's development, througout childhood and into later adult life.
•The main theoretical background is Bolby's attachment theory, which triggered Ainsworth's development of the Strange Situation technique.
•This facilitated research into secure and insecure attachment in infancy, and its effects on development.
•The Adult Attachment Interview can be used to investigate the continuing effects of early attachment type through to adulthood.
•The chapter also considered the effect of parental behaviour on children's development - Baumrind's ideas on parental style, and research into adolescence.
