Dingbat
A typographic ornament.
cursive
typefaces that imitate handwriting,first used in the 16th century, script letters and and cursive typefaces appear to be drawn with pen and ink. Unlike script, cursive letters are not joined
swash
an embellishment or decorative addition to the character,found most often in cursive or italic faces
LC
Abreviation or acronym for all lowercase letters.

the typographic identity of a publication such as a newspaper,newsletter, or magazine
en dash
a dash one en long.

The enclosed part of the lowercase e.

Old Style
figures are numbers that are compatible with lowercase letters. Some align with the x-height, some have ascenders and some have descenders

Capline
an imaginary line that runs along the tops of the captial letters

verso
the left-hand page of a spread, always an even number
drop cap
a display capital letter that sits down into the body of the text usually at the beginning of a chapter or article (see initial cap)
ascender
a person or thing that ascends or causes ascension.
Proof
A preliminary print of set type or a comprehensive, used to detect errors before the final printing.

alternate character
a version of a letterform that is designed as part of a font, but is not a standard alphabet letterform. It may incorporate a swash, or be a different structure of the letter

what is lettering?
a specific use of a typeface, not necessarily a full alphabet.
negative leading
space removed so that type can run on top of the lines above or below it
what is a type family?
a collection of variations of weights, sizes and proportions of a single typeface.
A widow is a very short line – usually one word, or the end of a hyphenated word – at the end of a paragraph or column. A widow is considered poor typography because it leaves too much white space between paragraphs or at the bottom of a page.
