Crucifixion of Jesus
Terms Definitions
Palm Sunday
The day that Jesus entered Jerusalem; he rode in on a donkey and people honored him with palm leaves.
Agony in the Garden
Jesus prayed in the garden of Gethsemane that he wouldn't have to suffer unless it was God's will; Jesus has his disciples wait for him, and they fall asleep three times
Scourging
Before Jesus was crucified, this was done to him; whipped with a special tool that had thick knots, so that when it hit him, his flesh would tear; also known as "flaying."
Resurrection
Jesus' rising from the dead after three days; central belief about Jesus that Christians hold.
Last Supper
Jesus' last Passover dinner with his disciples; took place in the upper room of a house; where the Eucharist first took place.
Jesus' Trial
Initially charged with blasphemy, then taken to Pilate and charged with treason; then taken to Herod and claimed guilty; then taken back to Pilate and sentenced to death.
Crowning with thorns
Symbolic of Jesus claiming to be King of the Jews; also used to further his pain.
Way of the Cross
Series of steps used to represent the events and/or incidents that took place on Good Friday.
Crucifixion
The method of death chosen for Jesus by the crowd; involved being tied/nailed to a cross and waiting until the legs broke, so that the heart would be unable to pump blood, and only then would the victim die.
Burial
Jesus' body is taken into the tomb by Joseph of Arimathea.
Garden of Gethsemane
Where the agony in the garden happened; also where Jesus was arrested.
Jerusalem
The town where Jesus was crucified.
Golgotha
Means "place of the skull;" the area on the hill where Jesus was crucified.
Calvary
The hill on which Jesus was crucified.
Simon Peter
Person who denied Jesus three times in one night.
Herod Antipas
Decides Jesus is innocent and sends him back to Pilate.
Simon of Cyrene
Was picked from the crowd to help Jesus carry his cross, so that Jesus wouldn't die before even reaching Calvary.
Pontius Pilate
Convicted Jesus of treason.
Judas Iscariot
Betrayed Jesus' location to the Sanhedrin to earn some money; doesn't think he will cause harm to Jesus by doing so, but later discovers their true intentions; gives money back and hangs himself.
John
Promised to take care of Mary, Jesus' mother, after Jesus dies; one of the only disciples that made it to his crucifixion.
Joseph of Arimathea
Laid Jesus' body in the tomb.
Passion
Suffering; another word to describe Jesus' crucifixion.
Treason
To overthrow or an attempt to overthrow one's government; crime Jesus was charged of and put to death for.
Blasphemy
To say things that go against the teachings of God; Jesus was charged of this, but was not put to death for it because it was a religious crime and therefore did not concern the Roman dictators.
Lots
Game that was played; the soldiers played this to gamble away Jesus' clothes.
Paschal mystery
Name used to describe the series of events by which Jesus saved humanity.
Anointing
To bless with oil; Mary of Bethany did this to Jesus before the Last Supper.
Eucharist
The Christian belief is that Jesus is present in this both symbolically and literally; this practice started after the Last Supper.
Seven Last Words
1. Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.
2. Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.
3. Woman, behold your son. Behold your mother.
4. My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
5. I thirst.
6. It is finished.
7. Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.

Describes the events leading up to Jesus' death.

Used as meditation.
