An element or compounded that enters into a chemical reaction
What is activation energy
Energy that is needed to get a reaction started
What is a catalyst
A substance that speeds up a chemical reaction
What is an enzyme
A protein catalyst that speeds up a biological reaction
What is a substrate
A reactant of an enzyme-catalyzed reaction
What happens to chemical bonds during a chemical reaction?
The chemical bonds are changed during a chemical reaction
In the blood carbon dioxide reacts with water to produce what?
Carbonic acid ( H2CO2 )
In the blood carbonic acid is what?
Highly soluble and allows carbon dioxide to be carried to the lungs
What reaction happens to carbonic acid in the lungs?
It is turned into carbon dioxide gas
During chemical reactions what happens to mass and energy?
Mass and energy are conserved during chemical reactions
What is the difference between chemical reactions that produce energy and absorb energy?
Reactions that produce energy are spontaneous and happen on their own. Reactions that absorb energy need external energy to get started
Give an example of an Energy releasing reaction
Burning of hydrogen gas produces heat and water vapor ( sometimes explosions ) 2H2 + 02 -----> 2H2O
What is required to change H2O into hydrogen and oxygen O2
You need to put energy into the water in the form of electricity
Plants and Animals need what to stay alive?
They need energy source to power or carry out chemical reactions
Activation Energy is involved in?
Chemical reactions that produce energy and absorb energy, it is the the energy that is need to get a chemical reaction started
How do catalyst work?
By lowering the activation energy requirement to get a chemical reaction started

Cells make catalyst to speed up the chemical reactions
What enzyme is needed to speed up Caron dioxide being combined with water to produce carbonic acid
Anhydrase is an enzyme that speeds up the reaction by 10 million times
What is needed for a chemical reaction to take place
The reactants must collide with enough energy so existing bonds will be broken and new ones formed
What do enzymes do
They provide an area where reactants can be brought together to react. This area reduces the energy required for a reaction
What is an active site
This the area on the enzyme where the reactants bind together - substrate
What is a substrate
Is molecules or molecule ( reactants ) that an enzyme acts upon
What is an enzyme-substrate complex
This is where the enzyme and substrates bind together on the active site
What are catalyst
These are enzymes that help facilitate chemical reactions
What happens to enzymes in a chemical reaction
They stay the same only the substrates are changed into one or more products
What is the difference between a reactant and substrate?
They are essentially the same but reactants are called substrates when enzymes are acting upon it
