Epigonos? Pergamon, Turkey. Hellentistic. Roman marble copy of a bronze original of ca. 230-220 BCE Technically a trumpeter. Same hair, large nose, but also moustache. We are meant to walk around him, and there is a question of whether we are part of this narrative or not. Compare to earlier dying warriors- they don't anticipate the same reaction as the later ones. Temple of Aphaia- he's smiling. They communicate through logos, not pathos. It's more intellectual, not emotional.

"Modest Venus" as she covers her genitals or breasts- but the pose may be drawing attention contrast with earlier asexual depictions of women. Prior depictions of female nudes exist, but only prostitutes etc. Not "reputable women or Goddesses. Statue demands emotional, not cerebral response; a more physical response by the viewer.

Praxiteles softened the look- extra layer of fascia (?) between muscle and skin. Here you are drawn right to his genitals.- he's asleep and exposed so can be taken advantage of.

Epigonos (?), Roman marble copy of a bronze original of ca. 230-220 BCE. Found at Pergamom, founded under Attilid kings. Ethnicity depicted: Thick, clumpy hair, large nose. Gauls move from Anatolia to France. The statue records the fact that these great, fierce warriors were defeated by the Attalids. Kill off them men and sell off the women and children to slavery. Wife is being killed to prevent her becoming a slave. "Lysipppan viewing". We are forced to interact with them emotionally. Suicide is considered ignoble, but honorable; doesn't allow themselves to be enslaved. You have to move around it to understand it.
