Terms Definitions
Chemistry
noun. It is the science that investigates and explains the structure and properties of matter.
Matter
noun. It is anything that takes up space and that has mass.
Mass
noun. It is the measure of the amount of matter that an object contains.
Properties
noun. It describes the characteristics and behavior of matter, including the changes that matter undergoes.
Scientific Model
noun. It is a thinking device that helps you understand and explain macroscopic observation.
Qualitative
adj. This observation is one that can be made without measurement.
Quantitative
adj. This observation is one that uses measurement.
Substance
noun. It is matter with the same fixed composition and properties. It is any sample of pure matter.
Mixture
noun. It is a combination of two or more substances in which the basic identity of each substance is not changed.
Physical Change
It is a change in matter that does not involve a change in the identity of the substance.
Physical Property
It is the characteristic of a sample of matter that can be observed or measured without any change in its identity.
Solution
noun. Another name for a homogeneous mixture.
Alloy
noun. It is a solid solution that contain different metals and sometimes non-mentallic substances.
Solute
noun. The substance being dissolved.
Solvent
adj. The substance that dissolves the solute
Aqueous Solution
The solution when the solvent is water.
Element
noun. They have the simplest form of matter.
Compound
noun. It is a chemical combination of two or more different elements joined together in a fixed proportion.
Formula
noun. It is a combination of the chemical symbols that show what elements make up a compound and the number of atoms of each element.
Homogeneous Mixture
a type of mixture in which the composition is uniform and every part of the solution has the same properties.
Heterogeneous Mixture
a type of mixture in which the components can be seen, as there are two or more phases present.
Aspirin
noun. A synthetic compound used medicinally to relieve mild or chronic pain and to reduce fever and inflammation, usually taken in tablet form.
Taxol
noun. A compound, originally obtained from the bark of the Pacific yew tree, which has been found to inhibit the growth of certain cancers.
Volatile
adj. The change of a substance to a gas easily at room temperature.
Density
noun. It is the amount of matter (mass) contained in a unit of volume.
Chemical Change
The change of one or more substances into other substances.
Chemical Reaction
Another term for chemical change.
Chemical Property
They are those that can be observed only when there is a change in the composition of the substance.
Law of Conservation of Mass
The law that in a chemical change, matter is neither created nor destroyed.
Energy
noun. It is the capacity to do work.
Exothermic
adj. Chemical reactions that give off heat energy.
Endothermic
adj. Chemical reactions that absorb heat energy.
Sublimation
verb. The process where a solid matter turns into a gaseous form.
Decantation/Extraction
verb. It is the process of purifying a liquid from a solid substance/ It is the process of separating two substances.
Macroscopic
adj. Matters that are visible to the naked eye.
