Solar System Vocabulary (Douglas) Flashcards

Terms Definitions
Geocentric
A model of the universe in which Earth is at the center of the revolving planets and stars.p#555
S: The solar system is not in a geocentric orginazation becuse the Earth is not at the center.
Hint:
Heliocentric
A model of the solar system in which the Earth and the other planets revolve around the sun.p#556
S:Our solar system is a heliocentric solar system because the sun is at the center.
Hint:
Ellipse
An oval shape, which may be elongated or nearly circular.p#557
s:The orbit of our solar system is said to be elongated.
Hint:
Inertia
The tendency of an object to resist a change in motion.p#522
S:inertia is when the speed of an object is supposed to change but resists.
Hint:
Gravity
A force that moves rocks and other materials downhill; the force that pulls objects toward each other.p#205,520
S:when atronauts go to the moon they can jump 3 times as much as they could before becuse there isnt gravity
Hint:
Terrestrial Planets
The name often given to the four inner planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars.p#566
S:T errestrial planets are the first four planets closest to the Sun.
Hint:
Retrogade Rotation
Spinning backwards on its axis. this refers to the facts that venus rotates backwards on its axis compared to Earth.
S:Even if we had a retrogade rotation we would still haveday and night at the same time.
Hint:
Greenhouse Effect
The process by which heat is trapped in the atmosphere by water , vapor, carbon dioxide , methane, and other gases that form a "blanket" around Earth; the trapping of heat by a planets atmosphere.p#411,569
S:some heat waves are caused by the greenhouse effect trapping heat.
Hint:
Gas Giant
The name often given to the four outer planets: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.p#575
Hint:
Comet
A loose collection of ice, dust and small rocky particles, typically with a long, narrow orbit of the sun.p#585
Hint:
Asteroid
Rocky objects revolving around the sunhat are too small and numerous to be considered palnets.p#586
Hint:
Asteroid Belt
The region of the solar system between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, where many asteroids are found.p#586
S: The orbits of the planets is made up of astreoid belts.
Hint:
Meteoroid
A chunk of rock or dust in space.p#533,587
S: A meteoroid can be found almost anywhere in outer space.
Hint:
Meteor
A streak of light in the sky produced by the burning of the meteoroid in Earths atmosphere.p#587
S: meteors come through our atmosphere almost everyday we just dont see them because they burn in the atmosphere.
Hint:
Meteorite
A meteoroid that passes through the atmosphere and hits Earths surface.p#587
s: craters are created when meteorites hit earth with such a strong impact.
