Rt 205 chapter 2 Flashcards

Terms Definitions
Mass
Quantity of matter in an object
Weight
Force that an object exerts under the influence of gravity
Kilogram
1K= 1,000 grams
Substance
Material that has definite & constant composition
Mixture
Two or more substances are combined. An example is AIR. It is combined w/ oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, & other substances
Elements
Simple substances. It cannot be broken down to anything simpler.
Compounds
Complex substances. When two or more elements are chemically united in definite proportion. Water & salt are an example.
Atom
Smallest particle of an element
Molecule
When two or more atoms are united
Gas
Weak attraction between atoms
Solid
String attraction between atoms
Liquid
Medium attraction between atoms
Energy
Ability to work. Joule (J)
Radiation
Energy is emitted & transferred through matter
Equation of MATTER & ENERGY
E=mc2 E= energy m= mass c= constant ( speed of light in a vacuum)
Matter & Energy
Cannot be created or destroyed but can be converted from one form to another.
Nucleus
Small sense center. Located inside atom. It is the heart/ Braun of atom.
Nucleons
Protons & neutrons
Neutrons & protons
Composed of smaller subnuclear structures called quarks
Atomic # or Z #
# of nuclear protons in an atom
Isotope
Atom loses or gains neutrons or electrons. SAME protons DIFF neutrons
Ion
Atom gains of losses an electron
Ionization
Process of adding or removing an electron from atom
Positive ion
E is removed from atom
Negative ion
