Terms Definitions
Universe
Is made up of all known objects (stars, solar systems, planets, moons, comets, space rocks, dust, gases) and energy in space.
Big Bang Theory
The great explosion that is thought to have caused the formation of the universe.
Galaxy
A family of stars.
Milky Way Galaxy
Galaxy that contains earth and the solar system
Solar System
Contains the sun, eight planets, their moons, comets, asteroids, and meteoroids.
Geocentric Theory
The idea that all objects in space revolve around Earth.
Heliocentric Theory
The idea that the sun is at the center of the solar system.
Rotation
The movement of a space object, such as Earth, turning on its own axis.
Revolution
The movement of one object, such as Earth, around another object, such as the sun.
Gravity
A force that attracts objects to one another.
Comet
A space body made up of ice, dust, and small particles which
can be found in the Oort Cloud and Kuiper Belt.
Asteroid
Large space rock in the solar system. Can be found in the Asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.
Meteoroid
A small space rock made of rock and metal that forms from asteroids and comets.
Meteorite
A meteoroid that hits earth’s surface.
Meteor
A meteoroid that burns in the atmosphere.
