Course Hero Honor Code

  • Our Honor Code

Course Hero goes above and beyond to help you— not just in passing your classes, but in expanding your education by connecting you with new topics, concepts, ideas, educators, and students. We’re dedicated to providing high-quality academic resources to help you learn and study more effectively, and we’re equally committed to ensuring proper usage and protecting ownership of those resources.

While we believe that most Course Hero members use the site in the manner for which it was intended, upon registration all users must confirm that they have read, understood, and agreed to comply with Course Hero’s Honor Code.

We expect our users to act with academic integrity. Therefore, anyone who misuses our site for the express purpose of cheating and/or claiming another user’s content as their own will be met with appropriate action. Review our rules for proper use below:

  • Do

Use Course Hero materials to study more effectively and to better understand your course material.

Upload quality original study materials to Course Hero that you have created entirely on your own.

Use Course Hero study materials and tutors to assist with your assignments when it is appropriate.

Use Course Hero in a manner that follows your instructors’ or institution’s academic honor codes.

  • Don't

Copy solutions directly from Course Hero resources and submit them as your own work.

Upload another person’s study materials to Course Hero and claim them as your own study materials.

Use Course Hero materials or tutors to complete assignments when instructed not to use outside help.

Use Course Hero in any manner that violates your instructors’ or institution’s academic honor codes.

Cheating is ill-advised for several reasons:

First, by stealing someone else’s ideas, you’re not bothering to learn the material yourself. You’ve shelled out a handsome sum in tuition, and cheating only erodes the value of the education in which you’ve invested. You’re really cheating yourself, in the end.

Second, you will likely get caught. Many universities leverage sophisticated technologies to scan for plagiarized material in student-submitted work. We are an online database, and therefore Course Hero materials are often crawled by these content monitoring tools. We’re even going out of our way to make sure that they are.

Third, the consequences are severe, and for many institutions, convictions of academic dishonesty can result in probation, suspension, or even expulsion.

We welcome suggestions and feedback on how we can improve our Honor Code. Please email your ideas to us at [email protected].

Frequently Asked Questions

Copyright & DMCA

What is copyright and why is it important?

According to the US Copyright Office, copyright is a form of intellectual property law that protects original works of authorship including literary, dramatic, musical, and artistic works, such as poetry, novels, movies, songs, computer software, and architecture. Copyright does not protect facts, ideas, systems, or methods of operation, although it may protect the way these things are expressed.

Copyright grants the author of a work exclusive rights to copying, distributing, preparing derivative works based on a work and performing or displaying the work publicly. It ensures that authors are the sole benefactors of their work.

How does Course Hero handle copyright issues?

Generally speaking, copyrights are held by the creator of the material. However, there are a couple of exceptions including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Employers who own the rights to employee work
  • Fair Use content
  • Public Domain content
There is no official copyright notice on this material, is it still copyrighted?

Copyright holders are not required to label their work with an official copyright notice in order for that work to still be protected. If you are not the author of the specific material you wish to upload, you MUST get express permission from the copyright holder.

What is DMCA?

The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) is a United States copyright law that addresses the protection of digital copyrighted materials.

The DMCA has five titles, or sections, with Title II having the most immediate impact on the Course Hero community. Title II outlines certain legal duties with which Online Service Providers (OSPs) must comply in order to limit their legal liabilities in the event a user of their service violates copyright laws. An OSP is defined as "an entity offering the transmission, routing, or providing of connections for digital online communications, between or among points specified by a user, of material of the user’s choosing, without modification to the content of the material as sent or received". Course Hero is an OSP for users.

How does Course Hero comply with the DMCA?

We do not want unauthorized content on our site, and Course Hero’s Terms of Use explicitly state that users may only upload content they have the right to upload.

We rely on copyright holders and our users to flag any alleged copyright infringement so that we may promptly investigate the incident, protect copyrighted work, and ensure compliance with the DMCA.
