Summary

It rains so hard that the couple decides to leave their romantic getaway in the mountains and return to the city, closer to the hospital in preparation for the birth. They check into another hotel and order dinner. In the next weeks, Catherine buys what she needs for the baby, and Henry takes up boxing at the local gym.

Analysis

Throughout the novel Henry and Catherine have sought to isolate themselves from everyone else in the world, rarely socializing, preferring to spend their time together. With the baby's birth approaching, they become desperate to spend each moment together: "[We had] a feeling as though something were hurrying us and we could not lose any time together." On the surface Henry is talking about the baby, but his statement also foreshadows Catherine's death.
