Main Ideas Conservation Ethics Ethical conservation leads to harmony between people and nature. 1800s Wisconsin The progressive political climate in Wisconsin gave rise to naturalists’ activism and conservationist government policies. Nature Writing Leopold was influenced by naturalist John Muir, whose activism helped create several U.S. national parks in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Dust Bowl Lessons A 1930s ecological event that caused desertlike conditions in the Great Plains, the Dust Bowl showed that conservation is an important issue. Context Using his experience in forestry, knowledge of ecology, and sharp eye for detail, Leopold was able to express both a deep love of nature and the urgent need for human effort in protecting it. Published after Leopold’s death, the essays in A Sand County Almanac inspired both nature lovers and political activists. ALDO LEOPOLD1887–1948 Author Leopold fully expresses his ideas about ethical land use and conservation. The Upshot Leopold expands his musings to unique natural areas throughout North America. Sketches Here & There Leopold observes seasonal changes on his Wisconsin farm and muses on nature. Writing the Almanac Leopold’s appreciative observations of nature on his Wisconsin farm highlight the intricate connections between living things and their environments. These observations give rise to ideas about how to practice ethical conservation and live in harmony with nature.
