Guns

Throughout Kyle's life, guns come to symbolize his identity as a competent masculine hero. As a child, Kyle hunts deer with his father and works as a ranch-hand who uses a gun for pest control. During his time as a SEAL, guns are an essential tool for Kyle's sniper work. In matching the weapon to the job, Kyle's gun also becomes a symbol of his careful precision and skilled excellence. After leaving the military, Kyle collects guns and founds a tactical training facility for police officers and military personnel. As Kyle grows and matures throughout his life, so too does his relationship to and skill with guns.

Bronze Star Medal

During his second deployment in Iraq, Kyle earns a Bronze Star Medal for valor (personal bravery). This award can also be given for achievement or merit. In February 1944 by Executive Order, American President Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882–1945) established the Bronze Star Medal. The Bronze Star Medal has been awarded to military personnel for heroic service, beginning as early as 1941, against an armed enemy or foreign force that does not involve flight. Kyle's medal is a result of his sniper duties, including raids on apartment complexes where insurgents were suspected of being housed. The medal symbolizes Kyle's bravery in wartime situations.
