Birth, Education, and Career Beginnings

Lauren Oliver is the pen name of Laura Suzanne Schechter, who was born on November 8, 1982, in Queens, New York. As the daughter of literature professors, Oliver grew up in Westchester, New York, surrounded by stories. Her father, Harold Schecter, is the renowned author of or contributor to more than 40 books, many of them true crime. Oliver attained a degree from the University of Chicago in literature and philosophy and earned a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from New York University. While working as an editorial assistant at Penguin, Oliver began writing her debut novel, Before I Fall (2010).

Reception and Further Work

Before I Fall received critical and industry acclaim, became a New York Times bestseller, and was later made into a feature film. In the years following her first book, Oliver has written and published more than 10 additional novels, including the adult family drama Rooms (2014). With American producer and writer Lexa Hillyer, Oliver founded the media company Glasstown Entertainment, formerly known as Paper Lantern Lit., which develops content for books, film, and television. She married John Parker (after whom she named a character in her 2015 novel, Vanishing Girls) in 2016.
