Thady Quirk

Thady Quirk is the loyal servant to the Rackrent family. He has served several generations of Rackrent lords and notices their shortcomings but does not dwell on them. He is emotional and does his best to maintain the honor of the noble family even as each lord of the estate makes poor economic choices.

Sir Patrick Rackrent

Sir Patrick Rackrent is a hospitable and generous Irish aristocrat. He is the first of the O'Shaughlin lords who had to change his last name to an English last name as an act of Parliament. Sir Patrick is generous with the people who farm his land. He freely gives them whiskey and alcohol as reward for their hard work. Sir Patrick's generosity puts him into massive debt, but he is remembered as a noble and generous man.

Sir Murtagh Rackrent

Sir Murtagh Rackrent is miserly with his money. He spends as little as he can on entertainment or comforts for his tenants. Sir Murtagh refuses to pay the debts of his father Sir Patrick Rackrent and spends more money on lawsuits with debtors than he would have if he had just paid the debts. Sir Murtagh does not spend money on gifts or hospitality for his tenants.

Sir Kit Stopgap

Sir Kit Stopgap is a distant and cruel landlord. He wants to squeeze as much money out of his tenants as he can and hires someone to manage the estate. Sir Kit wants to restore the prestige and glamor of Castle Rackrent but does not want to invest in the people who work on his estate.

Sir Condy Rackrent

Sir Condy Rackrent whose proper name is Sir Conolly Rackrent is likeable and good natured but does not have any business acumen. He wants to restore Rackrent to the success of Sir Patrick Rackrent's era but acquires gambling debts that compound the previous debts of the estate. Sir Condy lacks leadership and wisdom and drinks too much alcohol to be an effective leader.

Jason Quirk

Jason Quirk is an ambitious attorney who grew up near Rackrent Castle. He has studied the Rackrents and comes up with a plan to purchase the estate for himself. Jason faces problems directly instead of avoiding them and comes up with plans to settle the debts of the Rackrent Estate. Jason is a shrewd businessman but acts unkindly toward Sir Condy.
