Volumnia, Virgilia, and Valeria, having returned from the Volscian encampment, are praised by senators and lords and treated as saviors of Rome for having convinced Coriolanus not to attack the city. Drums and trumpets sound as the three women cross a stage with lords.
The play's masculine sphere of military and politics exalts the women and places them at center stage. The three women are more victorious in their bloodless battle against Coriolanus than Coriolanus was in his blood-spattered victory over the Volscians.
