The play is in the present tense.
The mother of the family Ella describes to her son Wesley the curse that she feels. She states it is invisible but always there. She describes it as coming every day and she can see it coming. She tells Wesley she cannot stop it or change it. Ella is a victim. She feels she has no control over her life or who she is. This is what she is starving for and she will pass this feeling on to the next generation and the one after that. Ella says it is all in the genes and there is no escape.
