Rubashov Rubashov is a former revolutionary and Party functionary. He is arrested for opposition to the Party and forced to confess. Read More
Gletkin Gletkin is a brute who is totally immersed in the illogic of the new Party ideology. He gets Rubashov to confess. Read More
Ivanov Ivanov was a member of the Old Guard but is now a Party official. His soft method of interrogating Rubashov leads to his own execution. Read More
Hare-lip Hare-lip is a prisoner in a cell along the same corridor as Rubashov. He's later coerced into testifying against Rubashov. Read More
Little Loewy Little Loewy was a union organizer of dockworkers in Belgium. His unspoken disapproval of Party betrayal of the workers leads to his death. Read More
Richard Richard is a young leader of a communist cell in Europe, probably Germany. His rewording of a Party pamphlet is viewed as treason, and he's arrested and probably executed. Read More
402 402 has the cell next door to Rubashov. The two prisoners communicate by tapping on the wall between them. Read More
406 406, also called Rip van Winkle, is a European sociology teacher who was imprisoned for being a communist. When he moved to the USSR he was imprisoned for anti-Party views.
Arlova Arlova was Rubashov's secretary and lover. To save his own life, he falsely denounced her, which led to her execution.
Barber The barber cuts the prisoners' hair and shaves them. He also passes a note to Rubashov.
Bogrov Michael Bogrov is a navy commander and revolutionary. He is executed for disagreeing with No. 1 about submarines.
Docker Docker is a Belgian dock worker who questions Rubashov's explanation for breaking the shipping cargo boycott.
Doctor The doctor is the physician at the prison.
Professor Kieffer Professor Kieffer is an Old Guard historian and acquaintance of Rubashov and the father of Hare-lip. He falls afoul of the Party when he writes the truth about No. 1.
No. 1 The cruel and dictatorial leader of the Party, No. 1 is not an actual character in the novel. But his presence and his inhumane ideology underpin everything that happens.
Old arresting commissar The arresting commissar is an older officer more attuned to Rubashov's feelings and history.
Paul Paul is a Belgian dock worker who works with Little Loewy.
Peasant The peasant is a reactionary prisoner who opposes the Party and longs for former happy days.
Stenographer The stenographer is the note-taker at Rubashov's interrogations with Gletkin.
Warder The warder is a functionary at the prison where Rubashov is held.
Vera Wassilijovna Vera Wassilijovna is Wassilij's daughter and a Party ideologue.
Wassilij Wassilij (at the beginning of the novel, also called Vassilij) is a porter at Rubashov's apartment house
Young arresting commissar The young arresting commissar is a strict officer, ideological and brutal.
Herr von Z. Herr von Z. is an Old Guard friend of Rubashov. He agrees that the Party and No. 1 need to be corrected.
