Lord Byron
1819–24
Epic Poem
Adventure, Romance
Don Juan is first told by an unnamed first-person narrator who charts the early childhood of the protagonist Don Juan. The unnamed narrator is soon revealed to be Lord Byron himself and he takes a more forceful, more objective role in the narration in which he often interjects with his personal opinions, feuds, and biographical details.
The story of Don Juan is told in the past tense but Lord Byron makes frequent references to contemporary events and people in the present tense.
The title of Don Juan is the name of the central figure in the poem and a traditional figure from Spanish literature. Don Juan is a young Spanish man who travels across Europe and finds himself in various romantic adventures.
