Gilbert returns to Indonesia after a few months, landing two hours after the huge tsunami struck Southeast Asia on December 26, 2004. Bali was not affected at all.
Felipe meets her at the airport. Ketut Liyer greets her on his porch. Yudhi is happily working as a guitar player at a resort. Wayan is living in her beautiful new house. This last chapter is the place where Gilbert is able to name all those who made that house possible. She also thanks her Uncle Terry and Aunt Deborah for "all the help they gave me during this year of travel."
Her memoir ends with this advice: "maybe it's wiser to surrender before the miraculous scope of human generosity and to just keep saying thank you, forever and sincerely, for as long as we have voices."
Gilbert's thankfulness for living the life she has been given is obvious throughout her memoir. It is appropriate that her book also ends on that note. It completes a circle, begun in her introduction to Eat, Pray, Love, of giving thanks to those who helped her along her journey.
