Play
History, Tragedy
The play Edward II dramatizes events in the reign of the historical Edward II, king of England from 1307–27. Many English chronicle or history plays are titled with the name of the monarch whose reign is featured. The play's full title is "The troublesome raigne and lamentable death of Edward the Second, king of England: with the tragicall fall of proud Mortimer." Mortimer Junior, an ambitious nobleman who briefly controls the monarchy before his death, is the play's main antagonist. Both Edward and Mortimer Junior fall from power.
