The title Endgame refers to the final segment of a chess match called the endgame. In a chess endgame, the match is almost over, few pieces remain on the board, and the defeat of one player is inevitable. A seasoned player will likely accept this defeat, but often a new player will struggle against it. The full title, Endgame: A Play in One Act, captures the metaphor of the chess game while emphasizing the situation of the four characters onstage who are waiting in the final act of their lives for death.
