Everything I Never Told You is written in an omniscient, third-person narration told from the perspective of alternating characters. At times, the reader closely aligns with Marilyn, Lydia, Nath, James, and Hannah.
The story line of Lydia's death, the police investigation, and the emotional aftermath is told in the present tense, giving the reader the same sense of urgency the Lee family feels. The novel includes flashbacks written in the past tense that help flesh out the mystery of Lydia's death.
On the surface, Everything I Never Told You echoes one of the novel's last lines. It also holds thematic significance. After Lydia dies, each member of the family thinks about what they might have said to Lydia had they known it was the last time they would speak to her. It also references the family's many hidden secrets.
