Fun Home is narrated in first-person past tense from the retrospective point of view of the writer, Alison Bechdel, considering her childhood and formative years.

Fun Home is a reference to the funeral home the author's family ran when she was growing up. The title may also allude to funhouses, establishments in carnivals filled with mirrors that offer distorted reflections of those who visit them. The subtitle, A Family Tragicomic, alludes to the serious discussions in the book, including the tragedy of the author's father's untimely death, mixed with the humor that permeates the book and lightens the tone.
