Giving an Account of Oneself discusses the challenges faced by individuals as they attempt to reconcile their true selves in the face of societal norms or standards. These challenges present themselves through an inability to understand a person's placement in society, the influences that have shaped a person, and the impact of self-perception on others. Author Judith Butler explains that it is impossible and irresponsible to believe that an individual can accurately assess their true identity. However, an attempt may be made to reconcile inconsistencies and societal impositions through the generation of a personal narrative, or account, of oneself.
Giving an Account of Oneself describes the importance of composing and sharing a personal narrative in an attempt to assess the self against norms and become morally accountable. An individual becomes vulnerable to judgment yet open to authentic connection by providing an account of oneself to others.
