Joseph E. Stiglitz is a Nobel Prize-winning economist whose vast experience and expertise include high-level work for the World Bank as well as for the U.S. government. He uses his experience, knowledge, and insight to analyze globalization, or the development of economic policies that more closely integrate the countries and peoples of the world. He looks at the way globalization functions, why it often fails to bring about economic benefits, and what changes are necessary to make it more effective. His main focus is on the principles that guide the lending practices of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the effects these principles have on countries in crisis or transition. Stiglitz published a revisited version of the book in 2017, including a new, 97-page introduction. This guide discusses the original 2002 publication. Globalization and Its Discontents remains one of the foremost sources on the liberalization policies of the IMF.
The title indicates that the author, an expert in the economics of globalization, recognizes that in some ways modern globalization has led to problems but believes these problems can be remedied.
