Heracles is named after the central character, the mythical Greek hero Heracles. It is sometimes also called The Madness of Heracles because, during the play, Heracles is driven mad at the command of the Greek goddess of marriage, Hera. While under the influence of madness, Heracles slaughters his wife and children.
